The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse Are Riding Into Your Marriage

Miroslav Jovanović

After decades of research, the renowned relationship scientist John Gottman identified four patterns of behaviour that predict the breakdown of a relationship with remarkable accuracy. He called them the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”

1. Criticism

Criticism is not the same as a complaint. A complaint addresses a specific behaviour: “You didn’t wash the dishes.” Criticism attacks the person: “You never do anything — you’re so irresponsible.” Criticism erodes the sense of being accepted in a relationship.

2. Contempt

The most destructive of all four horsemen. Contempt involves belittling your partner — sarcasm, mockery, eye-rolling. When a partner feels contempt, the relationship is in serious danger.

3. Defensiveness

Instead of listening to our partner, we immediately defend ourselves and shift the blame. “I’m not the one at fault here — you started it!” Defensiveness blocks any progress in communication.

4. Stonewalling

A complete withdrawal from communication. One partner stops responding, “shuts down,” and becomes emotionally unavailable. This is a sign that the person feels overwhelmed and needs a break.

What can you do?

The good news is that these patterns can be recognised and changed. Through couples therapy, we work on developing healthier communication and re-establishing emotional connection.
