Same-sex partnerships do not differ in most aspects from those in heterosexual couples. Regardless of what kind of communities we live in, the same things bring us joy and burden us: love, jealousy, fading passion, infidelity, losses, breakups…
What particularly troubles non-heterosexual couples is the stigmatization and enormous resistance that their environment has toward them. Systemic family psychotherapy uses a modern, open, accepting, and non-judgmental approach in working with couples and families, which pays particular attention to the influence of the environment, while addressing all the life aspects we have described in the sections about personal and family development.
People who have spent years hiding their sexual orientation, or who still hide their relationship, their partner, their love, and the most beautiful moments of their lives from others, have received the message that what makes them happy and what forms part of their identity is wrong and deserves judgment. This often leads to feelings of guilt, and one of the therapist’s first tasks is to create a safe space in which the client can let go of that feeling.
