What Stage Is Your Family In?
Every family passes through different stages of development. Just as an individual grows from child to adult, a family also changes, grows, and faces new challenges at each phase of its life cycle.
Stages of the family life cycle
Forming a couple — Two people meet, fall in love, and decide to build a life together. This stage is full of romance, but also the first compromises.
The arrival of children — The birth of the first child completely changes the couple’s dynamic. New parents face sleep deprivation, shifting roles, and new responsibilities.
Family with young children — A period of intensive parenting. Children demand constant attention, and parents often neglect their own needs and their relationship with each other.
Family with adolescents — Teenagers test boundaries and fight for independence. Parents adapt to a new set of rules.
Children leaving home — The “empty nest” brings new questions about the couple’s relationship and individual identity.
Each of these stages comes with its own challenges, and that is perfectly normal. Understanding which stage you’re in can help you better navigate the difficulties you’re facing right now.
